Why the NAHW?

Introduction:

Founded in the Catskill region (New Paltz, NY) in the 1980s, NAHW began as a grassroots network of natural healers and holistic practitioners. Today it’s a private, for‑profit national association that has millions of member‑practitioners worldwide. Its stated role is to refer practitioners, host directories, publish newsletters, and support holistic businesses via marketing and networking. Anyone who is a practitioner of holistic and/or metaphysical practices can join NAHW which grants access to membership benefits, including the right to use their “certified business” seal.

Members are added to International online directory of “healers, light‑workers, reiki practitioners, massage therapists… These directory entries are used to promote referrals and signal visibility to consumers. Once your application and payment are accepted, NAHW sends you a digital logo that says “National Association of Holistic Wellness – Certified Business”. You’re invited to place it on your website or marketing materials, implying endorsement and credibility.

Optional perks, newsletters, and events are apart of their membership. They distribute member‑only newsletters, discount coupons, offer to accredited CEU and NON-CEU course listings, virtual events, and occasional retreats under the holistic umbrella to build community and professional growth.

Story

Why does NAHW offer this “certification”?

. Visibility: Being in NAHW’s directory increases your chance of online or local referrals. They emphasize that “word‑of‑mouth” through trusted association directories is a core marketing strategy.

. Trust signaling to consumers: The seal and scripted “declare you uphold Hippocratic ideals – ‘do no harm’” language is intended to reassure potential clients.

. Low barrier to entry: Anyone who pays can “be certified,” which makes marketing easier for new or solo practitioners looking for differentiation.

. Revenue model: The annual membership is NAHW’s primary income. Like many trade associations, they add value through services and visibility—not through independent standards or enforcement.

What it isn’t

The NAHW is NOT a substitute for a state license. Each state has their own rules and regulations for particular holistic occupations, such as Acupuncture, Massage Therapy, Physical Therapy, Doctor programs and Medical practitioners. NAHW accreditation doesn’t grant legal authorization to practice regulated services like nutrition counseling, therapeutic massage, naturopathy, or mental health AND are not a substitute for state licensing and does not prevent legal or regulatory risk. But, there are many health practices which do not acquire state licensing such as Crystal Healers, Reiki Practitioners, Feng Shui artist, Astrologers, Psychics, Mentalist, Tarot Readers, and Spritualists.
